Best Pizza in San Diego

The Best Pizza Places in San Diego

San Diego

I can eat pizza several times a week, so I happily accepted the challenge of finding the best pizza in San Diego. These are my top recommendations.

5. Buona Forchetta

Buona Forchetta has three San Diego locations, but the one in South Park is the original location that and is my favorite. They serve Neapolitan style pizzas made in special brick ovens that can withstand temperatures up to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. I love to eat on their heated and covered outdoor patio.  They accept reservations for parties of 6 or more.

4. Isola Pizza Bar

With locations in both Little Italy and La Jolla, Isola Pizza Bar always delivers a good pie with fresh ingredients. My favorite is the burrata mozzarella with tomatoes, basil and olive oil.  The Little Italy location has two dog friendly patios - one out front and a larger one in the back.

3. Filipis Pizza Grotto

If you're looking for a true Italian experience and great pizza, then Filipis Pizza Grotto in Little Italy is your best bet. Located in the back of a family Italian market that has been open since 1947, part of the fun is waiting in line as it snakes its way through the store.  The pizza here is served on a thick crust with the ingredients underneath the cheese.

2. ENO Pizzeria and Wine Bar

This pizza and wine bar at the Hotel del Coronado offers amazing artisan pizzas with breathtaking views of the historic hotel and nearby ocean. I always order the special to get a new experience each time.  But my favorite has been the cheeseburger pizza which tastes just like an In & Out animal style burger.

1. Basic Bar & Pizza

While they may have a basic one page menu, the pizzas here are anything but basic.  After three years in San Diego this East Village pizza place is still my favorite.  They serve thin-crust pizzas made in a brick oven with red or white sauce. You can order from their selection or build your own, just the way you want it.  Since this is right across the street from Petco Park, it can get quite busy right before a Padres game.  I found the best time to come is 20-minutes after game time.
