Cannonball

Mission Beach

My favorite day time bar & restaurant in San Diego

The SD Experience

I've been to Cannonball more than any other bar or restaurant in San Diego.  I keep coming back for the killer view, friendly staff, and the fact you can eat sushi on the beach.  Oh, and they have an awesome sunset margarita!  Cannonball is an outdoor restaurant located on the second floor of a two story building at Belmont Park in Mission Beach.  I love to ride my bike from Downtown to the beach to avoid the traffic. Cannonball is always the first stop when I arrive.

While I usually get the sushi, they also have options that range from salads to tacos, burgers and a variety of appetizers including shishito peppers, lobster spinach dip and ceviche.  They have a great citrus salad served with seasonal fruits, shaved fennel, radish sprouts, sesame, candied ginger and yuzu chive vinaigrette.  But I usually stick with the sushi and order salmon nigiri along with a sunset roll and enfuego roll.  Sometimes I'll get the lobster roll. The sunset roll has spicy tuna, cucumber, avocado, yamagobo, seared albacore tomatillo ponzu and cilantro.  The enfuego roll is made with crab, avocado, torched salmon, spicy aioli, eel sauce and green onions.  The roll pictured above with jalapeños is the lobster roll which comes with spicy lobster, yamagobo, tempura fired panko, avocado, spicy aioli, jalapeño rings and eel sauce.  You can't come to the beach without getting a margarita so I always order the sunset margarita.  And if Kyle is bartending, he always has my second drink ready before I even ask for it.  The sunset margarita has Herradura reposado tequila, cointreau, grand mariner, an orange shrub and grenadine.

There isn't a bad seat at Cannonball.  Every seat has an ocean view where you can look down at the boardwalk and beach below and watch all the activity while enjoying your meal or cocktail. This is a perfect location to watch the sunset too.  In the winter and spring it can be a little chilly with the ocean breeze so you might want to bring a sweater.  Although they do have portable gas heaters if it gets too cold.  In the summer and fall when the temperatures are the warmest it can get rather toasty if your seat is in the sun. So request a table with an umbrella.  And after you get enough liquid courage, you can head next door to ride the historic Big Dipper roller coaster at Belmont Park.
