Crack Shack

Crack Shack

Little Italy

Fun spot for chicken & egg dishes with stylish outdoor seating, a full bar & a bocce court.

The SD Experience

Celebrity chef Richard Blais partnered with Michael Rosen to open this outdoor chicken themed eatery in Little Italy back in 2015. Since then, they have opened up several other locations in Southern California and even one in Las Vegas.  They have crafted both the chicken and the egg with unique meals that range from fried and grilled chicken to deviled eggs.  The restaurant in Little Italy is entirely outdoors.  Patrons stand in line to order at the counter and then take a seat and wait for the food to be brought out to you.  It is frowned upon to save a table while others are in line or to save a table before you order.  I've been several times and the turnover is just enough that I've never been without a seat.  However, since it is an outdoor eatery, you may not always be able to find a seat in the shade.  There are also heaters to keep you warm from the chilly San Diego sea breeze.  Before you leave, you should try a game of Bocce and get a photo next to the biggest cock in town!

To Eat

The Crack Shack menu ranges from sandwiches, fried chicken, salads and sides to a full bar with craft cocktails.  The same menu is served all day whether it is morning, noon or night.  If you're in the mood for a breakfast item, I recommend the BAE. This is a bacon, avocado, sunny side egg with American cheddar served on an English muffin. You can choose to add grilled or fried chicken or may I recommend the chicken patty.  It's one of my favorites any time of the day.  Be aware they don't mind taking things off an order (I like to order mine without bacon), but they don't like custom orders.  However, you can always swap out fried chicken for grilled chicken if you prefer.    My all time favorite here is the G-Bird.  This is a grilled chicken breast with shishito pepper relish, swiss cheese, romaine lettuce and a tomato on wheat brioche.  Again, you may choose to get your chicken fried if you like, but I prefer the grilled chicken.  It makes me feel like I'm eating healthy (wink wink).  But either way, the chicken is always fresh, tender and delicious!  I'll usually split a regular order of Schmaltz fries with someone or an order of deviled eggs.  It depends what you are in the mood for, but I do love those deviled eggs. They also offer a variety of salads and bowls too, but I just haven't tried one yet.  I usually come here to indulge and having a salad just doesn't feel like a treat.

To Drink

If you'd like a drink, then you should order in line when you order your food.  However, if you are just coming for drinks, then you should scout out a seat at the bar.  There aren't many, so grab one when you see an open seat or hover over someone who looks like they are on their way out.  If you are in the mood for a cocktail then they have a list that includes about 10 drinks.  But of course, you can order anything including a wide selection of craft beers.  However, since the person at the counter is not usually a bartender - I've noticed specialty drinks can be somewhat difficult to explain. At least that was my experience once, so I have stuck to the menu since then.  Sometimes I'll get a Bloody Mary which is made with habanero vodka to make it a bit spicy.  Just know this Bloody Mary does not come with a meal on a stick.  The garnish is very simple with just an olive, lime and pepper.  Just how I like it.  Another one of my favorites is the Jack Rosen.  This is basically a whiskey sour, served with bourbon, orchard cherry, grenadine, lemon and spice cherry bitters.  I also noticed they have a Frose on the menu.  I've never ordered it, but when my sister Kim comes to town, I'll know where to take her so she can have her favorite summer time treat.
